Can Calming Treats Help Your Dog Relax?

Dog relaxing after having calming Treats

Autumn is a great time for feeling cosy and festive but it also brings a few things that we aren’t so happy about, like fireworks, stormy weather and extra knocks at the door on Halloween. These are all things that can make our dogs feel anxious and scared, but they’re not alone, they make us feel uneasy too! Many dogs experience stress and anxiety just like we do, and it can be really tough to watch them struggle. That’s why calming treats can help your dog relax, as can calming chews for dogs. They can make such a difference—they’re designed to help ease your pup’s anxiety and bring a sense of calm during those tough moments, whether it’s a loud bang from the random firework your neighbour just let off, a sudden clap of thunder, or any other stressful situation.

What Are Calming Dog Treats, Anyway?

Calming dog treats are like a doggy version of a soothing cuppa. They’re specially formulated with ingredients designed to help your dog relax and feel a bit less on edge. Some treats have natural goodies like:

  • Chamomile: It’s not just for sleepy teas! Chamomile can help soothe your dog’s nerves.
  • Valerian Root: Known for its calming properties, valerian root helps ease anxiety.
  • L-theanine: This amino acid can reduce stress and promote relaxation—ideal for high-strung pups.
  • CBD: Non-psychoactive (so your dog won’t be watching the telly through rainbow-coloured lenses), CBD can reduce anxiety and calm the nerves.

These treats work wonders for those “Uh-oh” moments—bonfire night, a car journey, or a trip to the vets.

When Should You Use Calming Dog Treats?

Life can be full of unexpected challenges for our dogs, and while we know the hoover isn’t something to be afraid of, it’s not so easy for them to understand. Sometimes, no matter how much we reassure them, they just need a bit of extra support to feel safe and relaxed. Here are some situations where you may find calming treats helpful:

  • Fireworks Night: They light up the sky for us, but for your dog, it might sound like the world is ending.
  • Vet Visits: We all get a bit nervous going to see the doctor, our dogs are no different!
  • Separation Anxiety: If your dog has a mini meltdown every time you leave the house, calming treats could make goodbyes a little easier.
  • Long Car Rides: Not every dog fancies a road trip. Treats can keep them calm and comfy.

How Do Calming Treats Work?

Calming treats aren’t an instant fix – it takes time for them to work, and your dog might not calm down right away. It’s important to be patient and understand that every dog responds differently. With regular use, though, these treats can really help ease their anxiety and bring a sense of comfort, allowing them to feel more relaxed in stressful situations.

Remember to always follow the recommended dosage (you may want to check with your Vet first) and pair them with reassurance, positive reinforcement, and plenty of cuddles.

Are Calming Treats Safe?

Absolutely! Most calming dog treats use natural ingredients, so you won’t have to worry about strange chemicals. Still, it’s always a good idea to check the label and chat with your vet if your dog has any specific health conditions or is on medication.

Our go to calming treat is from Forthglade Dog Treats. Our Jack Russell, 11 year old Scrooby, loves their Calming Soft Bites with Lavender and Chamomile, and they always help her feel a little less anxious. Another good thing about these treats are that they are suitable from 2 months, perfect if you’re looking for puppy calming treats!

A Chill Pup is a Happy Pup!

At this time of year, we always try to have calming dog treats in stock and regularly include them in our Gift Boxes, and in our October and November Subscription Boxes. Our Mega Treat Box or Tasty Treat Box are a great idea if you’re looking to spoil your dog with some treats to make them feel better!

So next time there’s a thunderstorm brewing, or you’re prepping for a long journey, don’t panic. Keep a stash of calming dog treats handy, and help your dog stay cool, calm, and collected.

Trust us—they’ll thank you with tail wags, puppy eyes, and a much more peaceful demeanour.

Warmest woofs,

Debs
